Dermal fillers - how do they work?

Dermal Fillers are comprised of the natural substances in the human body such as hyaluronic acid which becomes depleted as we age. Our natural collagen and elastin levels in the skin lessens, as cells lose their ability to produce more of this.

When we are young we have a natural abundance of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and collagen in our body, this helps the skin remain supported, keeping lines and wrinkles from developing.

By filling, smoothing and lifting folds and wrinkles on the face, dermal fillers can make a subtle but powerful difference to a person’s appearance, giving them a refreshed look.

The aesthetic benefit of dermal filler treatments can be seen immediately after the treatment. Treating wrinkles with dermal filler is fast, leaving no scars and discomfort is minimal.

What side effects may I expect following treatment?

Immediately after treatment there is often swelling, redness, some tenderness, and itching at the site of the treated areas. This is completely normal, it is only temporary and as a rule will disappear in 1 or 2 days.

The Lip filler treatment post injection swelling may last longer than other areas of the face. Some patients can experience swelling for up to 2 weeks. It is not uncommon for the lips to look uneven during this time frame, they may also be bruised. The immediate look of the lips after treatment is not the final result this will take a minimum of 2 weeks to be seen.

Who should avoid this treatment?

There is no known risk to those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, but we would advise against having treatment under these conditions.

Post treatment aftercare

Avoid touching the treated areas for at least 6 hours. After 6 hours have passed, the areas can be washed gently with soap and water. If the area is tender, apply some ice to the treatment site.

Do not engage in strenuous exercise right after the treatment. If possible, avoid the sun, as sun exposure will reduce the persistence of the product. Do not enter sauna’s or environments of extreme heat for at least two weeks following the treatment. Massage the treatment site if you experience lumpiness.

Do not apply any creams which contain alpha hydroxy acids, these products can be purchased over the counter so do your research about product ingredients before applying. Avoid the sun and wear a sun screen at all times. Patients who have had cold sores in the past should note that there is always a risk that injecting any product around the lips may cause the herpes to flare up again.

Patients taking aspirin, large amounts of vitamin C, anti-coagulants, or any other similar medications should be aware that this could increase bleeding and bruising at the sites of injection.

Due to dermal fillers ability to replenish the level of hyaluronic acid in the skin, this treatment also helps in improving skin’s moisture levels and water retention capacity.

Treatment can last from 6 -12 months (everybody metabolises differently), towards the end of this timeframe the effects of the dermal filler will begin to gradually soften. When the effects begin to soften, we aim to ‘top up’ the treatment.
